The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has issued a formal request to the Taliban authorities demanding clarity on the status and condition of journalists detained in recent weeks.

UNAMA expressed alarm at what it described as a 'systematic campaign' against media freedom, noting that the detentions appear to follow a pattern of targeting journalists covering sensitive topics including women's rights, education restrictions, and governance failures.

'We call on the de facto authorities to provide immediate information on the location, health status, and legal proceedings concerning all detained journalists,' UNAMA stated.

The UN mission also called for unhindered access by independent monitors to detention facilities where journalists are being held, and reiterated that press freedom is a fundamental human right that must be upheld regardless of the political system in power.
